Also known as a Declaration, Advanced Directive or Life Support Statement, this document allows an individual to indicate his or her wishes concerning the withholding or withdrawal of extraordinary, life-sustaining treatment when death is imminent. Although the health care agent has the authority to order or withdraw such treatment, the Living Will stands as an independent declaration of the patient’s desires if he or she suffers from a terminal illness or injury.
